Why Stories?

Humans evolved by telling stories. Through stories we communicate knowledge, beliefs and values...

We like to think of ourselves – homo sapiens – as more calculating than we actually are. The truth is, as humans, we are wonderfully illogical. In that we are governed as much by emotion and enduring beliefs about the world than we are influenced by the ‘evidence’. It’s why we tell stories – for the benefit of others, but also for our own benefit. To make sense of sometimes confusing or overwhelming events. A strong narrative is persuasive, touches the heart as well as the mind, and lingers in the memory of those who have heard it far longer than a spreadsheet or set of corporate documents.
